Like many people, one of my favorite things to do is watch family guy. Its an animated sitcom (in the same vein as the Simpsons), Family Guy was first created in 1999. The show was cancelled in the year 2000 (musta been a millennium thing) and then again in 2002. It was finally brought back in 2005 and continues today with countless syndication channels. The Family Guy is slated to continue being produced until 2012.
The show was created by Seth MacFarlane and features a dysfunctional family living in Quahog, Rhode Island. Their home town of Quahog is fictional and any similarity to a real town is completely coincidental.
Created by Seth MacFarlane, Family Guy is at the centre of MacFarlane’s deal with the Fox Broadcasting Company reported to be worth $100 million.
Watching Family Guy, you will be treated to a show that has been criticized for irreverent humor, accused of being tasteless and indecent. According to some, by watching Family Guy you will subject yourself to crude and ‘blue’ humor with a very loose plot and a typical thin storyline.
The show has been panned by critics and was called the worst show of the 1999-2000 season. The Entertainment Weekly has been one such publication. The Family Guy respond by having Peter wipe himself with a page from Entertainment Weekly saying “That’s one problem taken care of!”
The show typically features the character Peter and his adventures or perhaps better called his misadventures, his wife L ois, their three children Meg, Chris, and Stewie . Also with the family is a cigarette smoking, martini drinking, talking dog named Brian.

Family Guy came from Larry shorts which came from Seth MacFarlane’s desire to impress a girl with an animated show. Fox saw the two episodes and gave MacFarlane the green light to develop an animated television show. Family Guy first aired by Fox Broadcasting Company on January 31, 1999, right after the Super Bowl. This episode was viewed by an estimated 22 million people.
The show actually premiered in April as a regular series. The first season had only seven episodes. The second season starting in September 1999 was taken off the air after only two episodes. Family Guy returned the following March and completed the airing of the 21 episode second season. The third season didn’t begin until July 2001 and finished in February 2002. There were 21 episodes in season three.
Unfortunately, due to Fox moving the scheduling around somewhat irregularly, ratings for the Family Guy dropped significantly. The result of the ratings drop of course was cancellation and despite online petitions and a ‘save’ Stewie campaign, the series stayed canceled. Efforts to have Family Guy picked up by other networks failed and it seemed that Family Guy was gone forever. However, in 2003 Family Guy was picked up Canada’s Teletoon network. The show quickly gained amazing popularity due to is frequent airings. Shortly after Family Guy began showing on the Cartoon Network during its late night adult programming block where it continues to be shown today.
When finally released on DVD, more people started watching Family Guy. Over 2 million units were sold the first year, apparently surpassing compilations of such shows as Sex and the City and Friends. This success lead to rumors that Fox was considering bringing back the series.
On May 1, 2005 Family Guy was back on the air. It continues to be a Fox success due partially to its Sunday night time slot. Reruns of season four began to air as early as June the same year. Family Guy is contracted to be producing episodes until 2112, guaranteeing a good long run and many more reruns for years to come.
